After commiserating with Carolyn of Sewing Fanatic fame over the last few weeks as she’s been keeping us up to date about her recent water nightmare, I’m rather unhappy to announce that it’s my turn. Toronto was inundated with water on Monday night – it broke all precipitation records, including Hurricane Hazel – , and my basement got off easy – only 3 inches of flooding. I was home when the groundwater started bubbling like a little spring into my basement where the city’s water line comes into our house. All my girls were home, and I just want to say I am so so proud of them! They hustled and lifted and carried and pulled and moved rugs, totes of fabric, books, furniture and media out of harm’s way – most of it went upstairs, although we made way for 6 inches of water, should we get that much. There’s NO damage to anything sewing related, thank God! And all of our books are safe, too, which is a big thing in this house. Bookcases can go, but book collections are precious! Here’s what the sewing area looks like now. Actually, this photo is a good representation of what my entire house looks like right now, due to dumping items in random places in the hurry to get everything out of water’s way. And, of course, the kitchen upstairs is still incomplete, so that’s a disaster area. *sigh*

The insurance company finally sent over the clean-up/restoration company this morning with two huge, noisy and extremely effective dehumidifiers. And a lovely 100% natural disinfectant made from eucalyptus and thyme oils. It smells divine after all the wet and bleach smells. I’d been spraying with bleach as soon as the water was vacuumed up to inhibit mould and mildew. Ugh. I am so happy that someone arrived! I’ve been moving, cleaning, and emptying all the mess under the verandah in a space called the cantina and am overwhelmed but just how much more is left to do before it can all be put back together again. We’re drying out, but the drywall and an entire bedroom of carpeting and wood flooring needs to be completely ripped out. Needless to say, it’ll be a couple of weeks before any sewing gets done around here.
Oh, did I mention that the precious fabric collection is safe? I wonder what the insurance company would say about the value of that if it had needed to be replaced. 🙂

Poor you! Toronto got hit right after Calgary. I didn’t have any water or even lose power in Calgary. But it’s still affecting a lot of people.

So sorry to read about the damage to your home & the disruption to your sewing. Glad your were able to save your sewing stuff.

Lol, I’d love to see the reaction of the insurance company to the value of your stash! So sorry to hear you were flooded though – how annoying. Good to hear all your books, fabric, sewing related items are safe. Hopefully you’re back to your normal sewing self soon enough.

So glad you were able to minimize the damage and no fabric, or books were lost. We have had our share of torrential rains here too.
oh, bummer! Sorry to hear about that! We’re going through similar issues here in Georgia. We’ve had rain every day since end of June. There’s definitely flooding, also, now we’re all worried about stressed trees falling unexpectedly, yikes! So glad you saved your precious things!
Oh hell that’s awful …. there’s is nothing quite like water. Yipee for dehumidifiers though – how long will you have them do you think?

Oh my – so glad you survived! I live just putside Calgary and managed to evade the flooding here as well. Great news about the fabric, and I have to say that the fact that we talk about our fabric online would probably be of advantage in any insurance claims – at least we can prove how much we have 🙂
God that sucks!! I’m so sorry you have to deal with this :(. However I’m glad you’ve got clean up underway and virtually no damage to the things important to you. Wishing you much better luck and a home that quickly returns back to normal ASAP!
As someone who has just been through this…I am sooooo sorry! All I can say is keep your chin up and it will get better…everything will find it’s old home or a new one and you will emerge on the other side. I must agree that those dehumidifiers are amazing! Loud but amazing in how much moisture they wick out of the air so quickly and thoroughly. Glad you were able to get them in and working!
Woah! Luckily, everybody I know was okay, no severe flooding. Although my brother’s basement was also flooded, but sump pump took are of most of it. Hope things get back to normal soon for you!
I’m glad it was relatively minor! I hope things return to normally quickly and in a mold-free fashion!

Wow! It is amazing how much damage water can do. So glad you were able to move everything in time. Although now the ‘real’ work begins in putting it all back together – Hope the installation of new flooring goes well (and fast) and you’ll be back to it soon.
